Thinking about becoming a stay at home mom? Jumping into this position, either right away from the birth of your first child, or later in the lives of your kids, can be quite a jarring transition.
At work, you usually have a pretty clear starting time for the day, and a time when your work is finished. You have goals that you can start and complete. You have other adults to talk to during the day. A stay at home mom usually gets none of these things on an average day.
But don’t let that scare you off! Being a stay at home mom can be such an amazing time to bond with your kids and watch them grow up, all while teaching them to be amazing little people. So what exactly do you do with your baby all day? Here are 5 main things:
Playtime is the same as work time for baby. They learn so much through play, especially in their first couple years of life! Play with your little one. Show them how to roll a ball, push a toy car, hold a baby doll. As they get older it will be more fun for you, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play with a non-mobile baby!
Reading to your little ones is so important! Even if they will only sit for half a book, try it! My baby used to sit for only a couple of pages at a time, and now he’s lifting flaps and turning pages on his own. He’ll even get out a book and bring it to me to read to him! It’s such a sweet time having him sit in my lap while I read a little story to him. Just keep in mind, babies will rip book pages so easily, so board books are best until they have more dexterity!
Babies nap so much! Sleep is a huge priority in my house, both for our baby and for my husband and I. Sleep is literally as essential as food and water, so it is important to us that we all get the sleep we need. We sleep trained Gideon awhile ago, and now he takes his 2 naps per day like clockwork. The amount and length of naps for your baby will depend on their age, but if they’re still considered a baby, they should still be napping.
Whether this means nursing, bottle feeding, or solids.
Feeding your baby can be so fun! From the time my baby started solids, I’ve had him eating 3 meals a day, always with everyone. I didn’t want him eating on his own at separate times, because meals are such a social time and I wanted him to learn that from young age. No matter how you are feeding your child, it’s probably going to take up a decent chunk of your day.
Whatever You Want
I think it’s so important for baby to learn what normal life is like! When Gideon is awake, I do spend plenty of time with him, but I also work on the blog, cook, clean, go grocery shopping, and whatever else needs to be done. He can participate or sit with me if he wants, or he can play on his own. Independent play is so so important, so I always make sure he gets the opportunity to entertain himself every day.
Being a stay at home mom isn’t just sitting around watching TV and eating ice cream all day! There is definitely work to be done with the baby and around the house, and maybe even actual work if you are bringing it home with you. It can be a lot of work, but I think it’s the most rewarding job I’ve ever had.
