encouraging independent play

Independent play has been one of the top skills I wanted to teach my son from the very beginning. I’ve seen too many parents who can’t get anything done during the day because their children need them to play with them all day long. I’ve also seen how it can stifle creativity and overall independence in babies and kids.

your husband isn't babysitting!

All moms, but especially stay at home moms, can feel a certain claim over their children. We carried them in our bodies. We nursed them, woke up in the night with them, changed their diapers, all while healing from the bodily trauma that is pregnancy and childbirth.

how i cloth diaper

As I’ve mentioned on the blog before, I cloth diaper my baby Gideon. To me it’s just a simple part of everyday life with a baby, but I know to those considering cloth diapering, it can be so intimidating! There is tons of information out there on the web about how you should cloth diaper, how to do it for cheap, how to do it the cutest way, how to wash your diapers, how to organize them, what you should use and what you should never use, etc etc etc.

valentine's day as a new mom

Did you just have a baby? Are you just about to? Is your baby walking? In school? No matter what phase of motherhood you’re in I bet you’re thinking about Valentine’s day today, at least a little. Especially if you’re married!

Motherhood can definitely put a damper on the romance though, especially if your kids are too young to get in on some cutesy heart crafts…. and too young to give mommy and daddy some alone time.

If this sounds like you, here’s my list of some ideas and tips you can use today with your honey!

precious little sleep book review

There are so many different methods out there to sleep train your baby, it can be confusing to figure out what will work best. Every baby is different so what works for one baby might not work for another. That’s what Alexis Dubief aims to help with in her book Precious Little Sleep.

why i'm picky about my baby's toys

There are so many toy options out there for babies! Some are colorful, some are black and white, some are loud, some are silent, some move around, some stay put. Whether you have words to explain it or not, all moms have some sort of choosiness about the toys they want for their baby. Maybe you want all of the toys to be organic, or maybe you want them all to be loud and fun, ensuring a smile every time from your little one. Maybe you want them to match your home or maybe you’re happy with whatever toys are given to your family from others.

what to wear while breastfeeding

Having a baby can change your whole life, including your wardrobe! Some moms like to make sure their clothes are cozy and soft for snuggling their little ones, and I know all baby moms can agree that fabrics and colors that don’t show drool or stains easily fill our closets. But breastfeeding your little one can present a different challenge: that of how to give that baby access to your breast.

how to teach your baby about friendship

Friendship is such an important part of life! Friends are so much fun, a great outlet for stress, and accountability. Friends who have the same values as you (like Sarah and I!) are even better! However getting friends and keeping friends doesn’t always come naturally. I’m sure you, like me, have had some not-so-good friends sometime in your life. I want to make sure my children are great friends, so here are a couple of things I’m doing to help Gideon learn the importance of friendship.

parenting new year's resolutions

I’m not big on New Year’s resolutions. I’m much more likely to research and make change and start fresh at any given time. I can admit though that the start of a calendar year is a great time to reflect back on the past year, and use that knowledge and experience to prepare yourself for the year ahead. At the start of 2019, my son Gideon is 8 months old. Looking back on the beginning of his life, I have a few things I want to keep in mind heading into this new year.

what to expect: the first year book review

I, along with most pregnant women in America, read What to Expect When You’re Expecting while I was gestating my little one. I do have some thoughts on that book and will write about it another time, but this is about a book by the same authors called What to Expect: The First Year.

kristin's first birth story

I had a pretty easy and comfortable pregnancy, but the week of April 8th I was so uncomfortable! I had been on bed rest for 2 weeks (after preterm labor that had been stopped) and was finally free, determined to get this baby out. I walked all over trying to get the last of the things ready for baby. I even went to Disneyland!

5 ways to protect your marriage during the newborn stage

Having a baby can be such a strain on a marriage, especially in the first weeks and months of caring for a new life. Besides the sleep deprivation, healing from birth and all the new life changes can frazzle nerves and turn even the coolest people into crazy argument-starters.

bringing up bebé book review

I ended up reading Pamela Druckerman’s Brining up Bebé at the perfect time.  I was in the thick of my first trimester, down ten pounds and googling every little symptom with the word pregnancy or first trimester after, not to mention all of the pregnancy blogs and forums I was following.

the absolute minimum you need for baby

Expecting your first baby can be such a confusing time, especially if you’re trying to live a minimalist lifestyle. Everywhere you look retailers are trying to tell you everything you are going to need for this new person about to enter your life. Did you know that Amazon suggests over 50 different items you “need” to add to your registry? That’s crazy!
